The GR221, also known as the Ruta de Pedra en Sec or the Dry Stone Route, is Mallorca's premier long-distance hike, running along the spine of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range on the island's rugged northwest coast. This Mediterranean trail offers a blend of sea views, limestone peaks, terraced olive groves, and charming stone-built villages nestled into the hillsides. Wild camping is not permitted, but the trail is supported by a growing number of refuges and guesthouses, allowing for hut-to-hut hiking without a tent. The best seasons are spring and autumn, when temperatures are mild and the landscape is green and blooming—summers can be very hot, and parts of the trail are exposed with little shade. Did you know that the GR221 gets its name from the ancient dry-stone construction technique used for centuries to build terraces, paths, and walls that are still visible all along the route?
